We decided we couldn’t leave Red where he fell. We laid low for a few days, then went back for his body.

Dear Sir,

My name is Stefano, I’m a Veteran of the Last War that raged across our skies and planets. We have never met but I knew your son, Red. It is with deep regret and sadness that I must inform you that your son has passed beyond this realm and into the next.

A short time ago Red signed onto my ship, The Stone Shark. He joined my crew, The Void Dragons, to seek a life of adventure in the stars. He was a fine crewman and never complained about anything. Life in the stars for an independent crew is tough, but he took to it like a fish to water. I would often find him gazing out of our portholes at the galaxy with a smile on his face.

Red didn’t have much experience at the work we were doing, but he was enthusiastic and eager to learn. I took him under my wing to teach him how to survive the vagaries of the Ravaged Galaxy. A more attentive crewman could not be found anywhere. First to rise, he kept his bunk like he had joined the military. Spotless, ordered, everything squared away. Eager to impress his crew mates he was well liked by everyone. We all saw his potential and knew he would go far. He learned what he could from everyone aboard.

On a recent mission to recover some data from an abandoned settlement we came under fire. Another independent crew, but also the Pirate Fleets, had taken an interest in the same data. I have been in some tough fights, but that was one of the worst. We were outnumbered, outgunned, and taking damage from all sides. Red stepped forward with me into the breach to provide covering fire. It is no lie to say that I can only write these words to you because Red protected me. He saved my life. Not just that day either.

As we were retreating from the battle, a Pirate made a lucky shot and Red fell. I was three steps away and saw it happen. There was no pain, he fell instantly and would not even have known what happened.

Red will be missed by all The Void Dragons. His name has been inscribed onto our ships plaque. He will never be forgotten by any who sail the stars on The Stone Shark.

I lived on your moon for a short while and am aware of your burial customs. In a few days a stasis chamber should arrive for you. It contains Red’s body so that you may send him to the depths, as is your way.

Also included are Red’s personal effects. You should know that while he sailed with us he took up Scrimshaw. The carvings were some of his most prized possessions.

Stefano.

Captain, The Stone Shark.
