There’s Always More Zombies
We reached the end of the corridor and, as the map said, turned left. The door, naturally, was jammed but Gumball sliced through it. Unfortunately for us, that meant it was permanently open. We couldn’t close it behind us and the next zombie horde had arrived. When it rains it’s usually acid as they say. We charged through the door, no time to hang around, and entered a small self-contained warren of rooms.
I knew from the map that to get back to The Stone Shark, we’d have to drop down a level. That drop was by way of some hatches in the middle of this area. Once we got through those it should be plain sailing back to the ship. Should be, but as we all know, I’m not that lucky.
There were four doorways into this area which led to a bunch of rooms and storage areas. Nothing too special about them other than they would provide cover from, and for, the mass of Hastian’s victims that were milling in the area. We weren’t going anywhere without a fight.
Oh Good, More Fuckwits!
The bonus news was that, surprisingly, we weren’t the only crew to turn up to this shitshow. Pouring though the door opposite was another bunch of strung out suckers that thought this would be a really good idea. They looked like they regretted the decision far more than we did right now. I don’t know what it is about this place, but these morons immediately started shooting at everything in sight. The zombies, the doors, and yeah, us too. Time to start murdering a bunch of stuff.

Given the cover options available, we split into two fire teams. I went left with Sarge, Nitro and Gumball; Starburn headed right with Doc, Wolf, and Headcase. Lo-ball and Phantom headed up the middle Our basic aim was to get to the hatches and hey, if there was some shiny along the way, grab that too.
Since we were heading into it with yet another crew shooting at us I activated my Energy Shield. With luck that’ll keep some of the impending damage off me. While I was doing that Phantom rounded a corner and surprised a lurking zombie. He quickly dispatched it and moved into some cover.
Left and Right
My squad started moving through the storage areas to the left, it provided us some cover and made it harder for the zombies to come up on us. Starburn did the same on the right-hand side. The other crew had charged in mostly giving up on cover. They were shooting at the zombies and managed to take one or two down, but they were also shooting at us. We stayed in cover and crept forward trying not to die too much.
Of course, what we want and what happens seldom line up. The zombies started charging towards both crews and they eh, well they looked hungry. The first of them made it to the door of the room I was in, and that’s as far as it made it. I blasted it back and it dropped like a stone, more were right on it’s heels though.

This quickly turned into a complete shitshow of a fight. The storage areas we thought would provide us some decent cover quickly turned into a deathtrap. There were too many zombies to get past to leave the area so we started climbing through the windows. Sarge went first and was swiftly attacked by the horde. I watched him go down under a vicious swing from one of the plague victims. Not quite sure how it got the better of him but he was out of this fight. We’d drag him with us and see if he was still alive later.
Fight Better, You Useless Dickheads!
Wasn’t going much better for Starburn’s squad either. Headcase had lived up to his name and charged into melee with a zombie. He did not come out on top of that fight. Rather like Sarge, he was down and not getting up anytime soon. Wolf was faring better though and dropped another zombie.
As if there wasn’t enough going on, the asshole of a first mate on the other crew decided he didn’t have anything better to do and shot Phantom. Minor damage to his shell but that robot looked pissed. Not for very long though, because their sniper decided the same thing and put Phantom down for the count. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Lo-ball took a hit from a Runner’s pistol and went down as well. That made four bodies we’d have to drag through those hatches. I was really hoping there was a soft landing on the other side of them.

Sweet! Loot!
While being beyond annoying it was a handy distraction and I managed to hack a computer terminal and download some random data. With luck it would be useful and we could sell it or make something with it later. It also gave me an opportunity to get one of those damned hatches open.
With an escape route now available to us I covered the hatch and tried to keep the never-ending horde back. I could see them pouring in through the entrances. If we didn’t leave, and soon, we’d be swarmed. The other crew weren’t even shooting at us anymore. They’d spotted the same problem and were trying to get their own hatch open.
Gumball grabbed a couple of our downed crew, Lo-ball and Phantom, tossed them through the hatch and jumped in after them. Quite a feat of strength. Doc and Starburn grabbed Headcase and Sarge and dived through the hatch as well. The zombies were right on top of me now, in a few seconds it’d be knife to the eyeball time. This was shit was getting far too real. Wolf arrived then with the rest of the crew and we all dived through the hatch.

Screw Those Guys
Now, I’m not exactly a petty person, but that other crew had shot at us and dropped Phantom. So I pulled the hatch closed behind me. I heard it lock back into place. No idea if the other crew got out of there or not, but as I say, that’s a them problem.
Doc checked over the crew, nobody was injured, just knocked out. We got ourselves back on our feet and squared away.
Onwards to the ship.
