Okay, so here’s the thing, it’s no good having a ship and crew if you don’t have any work for them. I had The Stone Shark, I had The Void Dragons assembled, we had our supplies and the cash flow was looking pretty bad as a result. The other thing I had was no job and not much chance of getting one either. Remember that we’re currently parked on this literal backwater fishing moon? Yeah, so that means the Signal doesn’t get to these parts much. By ‘Signal’ I mean the contract jobs. They get broadcast across their own frequency but it’s not always easy to pick up. Several reasons for that, the first is simple, interference. That’s what we’ve got here. The second is that they want the Pirate Fleets to ignore it. Broadcasting loud gets you noticed. While it’s an open secret this broadcast exists, nobody looks too hard as long as it’s quiet.

Given the lack of work, my plan was to take a bit of a risk. We were blasting off, heading towards the galaxy interior so we could pick up the contract broadcast. Once we’ve got the Signal, we pick up some low risk, relatively easy work and get the crew tested as a unit. This actually worked out better than I expected. We were barely out of the system when we started receiving the Signal loud and almost clear. Might have to get a ComTech on board at some point to clear that up, but for now it’s fine.

A bunch of jobs started scrolling down the monitor. I immediately ruled out most of them, far too dangerous for an untried crew. I needed what we used to call a milk run. Something nice and simple to ease everybody into their new life. Eventually, I found one.

It was a fairly recent job on the Signal according the timestamp. Seemed to be quite easy too, just a straight up data grab. Some folk were looking to retrieve data stuck in a vault in an abandoned town on Pergalon. This should not be difficult. Decent amount of creds for it too, if it’s returned unopened. Personally, I don’t care what’s in it, I just want the money to keep The Stone Shark aloft and The Void Dragons fed.

I jammed the co-ordinates into the nav computer and we set course for Pergalon. Here’s hoping we get there before any other crews get the same idea.
